So, what does it mean to be strong in Jesus?

Joshua 1:9 says:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

This brings to mind leaving for the military. If you have served in the military you can probably relate to that day before you leave the life of a civilian and start your new life in the military.

It’s excited and frightening at the same time. There is really nothing that can prepare you for it.

All you can do is go through it and quickly find out if you have what it takes to complete all of the training you will soon go through.

It was an extremely hot day, we had been marching, running, and exercising for hours and some people were falling out due to dehydration.

I too was starting to feel light-headed and ready to collapse. After weeks of this, some of the recruits were starting to quit.

They either couldn’t handle the stress both mentally and physically or were just homesick and missed their family and wives back home.

I remember that I too was feeling horribly homesick and missing my girlfriend like crazy. We were inseparable at the time and at the time my best friend planned to marry me when I got to my first duty station.

Being raised in the church I always prayed throughout the day. I was praying a lot during this time.

I asked God, to give me the strength to carry on and not give up.

Each time I did this I felt more powerful and able to get through the next day. It felt like I was there forever, but once it was over I looked at it as a time when God carried me through a difficult experience.

This is just one time of many that being strong in Jesus was there for me when I didn’t feel I had the strength to keep going.

How To Be A Strong Christian

The Bible teaches that the life of a Christian is one with constant growth. Just as your body needs certain activities to stay healthy your spirit needs to stay healthy too following certain guidelines.

Below are seven guidelines that can help you mature and become strong in Jesus:

#1. Read Your Bible

Reading the Bible is extremely important. In my experience, I have not always been good about this, but you will find that the Bible will comfort you, correct you, and encourage you each day.

#2. Prayer

Prayer is communication, and the power of prayer is amazing. God will answer your prayers in one of three ways. Yes, No, or Wait. I think waiting is the hardest part for me.

#3. Church

It’s honestly not easy to find a good, holy spirit-filled, Bible-believing church these days. And that’s really sad, but it’s the times we live in. Going to church is important, though, because Christians need each other.

If you need help finding a church in your area here is a clever tool that will search for churches.

#4. Be Obedient

In a time where everything is centered, it can be challenging to be obedient. When you make Jesus the decision-maker and do not do what you want. You’ll always be going in the right direction.

#5. Memorize Scripture

When the devil attacks, arm yourself with scripture. By memorizing scripture, you become battle-ready for the enemy.

#6. Put on the whole armor of God.

Ephesians 6

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

#7. Die To Self

To be strong in Jesus means saying NO to the world and dying to fleshly desires. Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
